RHYTHMETRIC
A downloadable game for Windows
PLAY IN FULLSCREEN WITH SOUND ON FOR THE BEST EXPERIENCE!
Defeat your geometric foes by placing attack, move, and shield elements in a rhythmic sequence to catchy music loops.
Warning: Levels 4 and 5 are difficult (but passable)!
Controls:
A - Attack, S - Shield, D - Dash. Each in the direction of your mouse or cursor.
Made for Mark Brown's GMTK Game Jam 2025. Jam theme: Loop!
This game pays homage to Soul Knight, Geometry Wars, and Laserwave from the 2020 GMTK Game Jam.
NOTE: Because this is a graphics intensive game, it did not run well in Web GL, so my jam entry this year is an executable. Download the zip and extract it. RHYTHMETRIC.exe will be in the folder. Thanks for playing!
Will be developed into a full Steam release!

Thank you everyone for your interest! I'm currently working on college apps, so progress might be slow for a short while!

Challenging but fun. Felt like a timed aim labs, though the laser bouncing onto nearby targets reduced that a bit. Have you tried messing with the physics a bit so that your momentum lingers a bit while you're not dashing? Could be interesting to shoot while moving. Maybe the map could show where pickups are? Also projectile shots instead of hitscan as an alternative pickup? Just some ideas.
Something that makes Rhythmetric quite intriguing is how high the skill ceiling is. When I'm playing, it feels very difficult and I often don't feel like I have the time that I want to make decisions. However, it does feel like the proper push from a game about rhythm, and it almost wouldn't work as well if it took you out of the beat, even for a second to make a choice. It makes for a system that can let the player either help themselves massively or detriment their run, which arguably is not very healthy game design, but I think fits well in this case since it is a rhythm game and when you look at other rhythm games like Dance Dance Revolution, it follows the same design concept: easily explained rules and mechanics that require immense amount of executional skill to master. With a few tweaks, this could easily be another addictive rhythm game like DDR!
Thanks for playing and for the feedback! Your comment gave me a pretty good idea, in that perhaps there could be an undo button (that only works for like 4 measures and the last beat), so it is less punishing to the player if the mess up while still requiring skill to place the note.
I feel like when you get a new note it should pause, and give you a UI to choose where to put it. Super hard to not loose life while you're trying to place your next note! Super cool game though, :)
Hi! Thanks for playing! I'm definitely considering adding that as an easy mode toggle, but I feel like there's a good challenge in it of itself, in having to place your notes. Once you get the hang of feeling the beat I'd say it isn't too bad!
Really fun game, but it's hard. For the steam release, please consider giving the player a few seconds to get their loadout together.
Hey, thanks for playing and for the feedback! I'll definitely consider adding a few more seconds at the start of the game!
This is really cool, but the controls are frustrating. It's really hard to get your notes in the right place when everything is happening, and it feels really punishing if you're pointing the wrong direction.
I will say it does getting some used to, and if rhythm(ish) style games aren't your type of game that's alright, not every game is for everyone!
A personal tip is to listen to the music as opposed to looking over at the right whenever you want to place notes. Feel the beat rather than just trying to time it by looks.
Although one thing I might look into adding for the full release would be an easier mode where the player could click on the spots as opposed to having to time it.
Will need to test it first if I decide to implement it! Thanks for your feedback!
Really cool!
Please let me know when it's available to wishlist on Steam :)
Hey thanks for playing! I will do!

when i tried to download this it said "virus detected"
This often happens with Unity executables (as they're unsigned), you can google it if you'd like.
It's looking great, feels great. How did you implemented visuals and music sync? Like in a menu, some effects are triggered by music. Did you use some beat detector or is it cleverly synced and started at the same time? Also visualizators at the map borders.
Thank you! Currently, I just input the bpm, and it resyncs every time it loops. However, for the full Steam release I'm changing it to use a more accurate AudioSettings.dspTime!
For the visualizers, I use the built in GetSpectrumData function and scale the sprites off the strength of each channel.
great man keep it up
Thanks!
